Featuring emerging and cutting-edge musicians, Directions in Sound exposes Bay Area audiences to innovative artists from the underground music scene. Directions in Sound continues this year to include music-centric films paired with special live performances from the hottest Asian American artists.

    Asian American rappers Awkwafina, Dumbfoundead, Rekstizzy and Lyricks break ethnic and music-industry stereotypes in the documentary, BAD RAP. This musically-minded presentation will feature live performances from the highlighted artists.

  3. In Search of Perfect Consonance

    Ruby Yang / Special Presentations, Directions in Sound / Hong Kong / 2016 / Documentary, Short / 38 mins
    The latest documentary by Academy Award-winning director Ruby Yang follows hopeful young musicians from across Asia as they form a community under the tutelage of dedicated mentors. The Asian Youth Orchestra, founded during a time of tense pan-Asian relations and rejection of classical music in parts of Asia, illustrates how a shared passion for music can promote peace. Includes live performance.

    SF-based indie singer-songwriter Thao Nguyen journeys back to Vietnam to explore her homeland and reconnect with her mother. Todd Stan Krolczyk travels with Nguyen, capturing her happiness with success in the US and sorrow being away from family.
