Description
Honolulu-based independent filmmaker Kimberlee Bassford returns to CAAMFest with coming-of-age documentary WINNING GIRL, which follows 16-year-old athletic star Teshya Alo. Bassford continues her passion for social justice and women’s issues — also seen in her 2008 documentary, PATSY MINK: AHEAD OF THE MAJORITY — by profiling the teenage phenom’s determination, focus and honesty.
Over the course of four years, we see Alo’s triumphs and defeats, as well as her strengths and weaknesses, which she takes with grace and humility. She trains in her home state of Hawaii, while attending prestigious private school Kamehameha and attempts to navigate her way through puberty. Alo’s backbone is her tremendously loving and supportive family, who have given their money, time and dedication in order to fulfill her dreams. Underneath her vigorous tenacity, we see a kind-hearted, sensitive and innocent young woman who will soon take the sports world by storm.
