Forbidden City, U.S.A.
Directed by Arthur Dong
Swing back in time to Chinatown in the 1930s in a premiere of the new digitally remastered version of FORBIDDEN CITY, U.S.A. CAAM celebrates Arthur Dong’s documentary with live performances and a reading of excerpts from the book by Dong himself — Forbidden City, USA: Chinese American Night Clubs, 1936-1970.
The film landmarks the untold history of San Francisco Chinatown’s entertainment scene and showcases original Chinese American nightclub performers who broke down stereotypes and cultural barriers with song and dance. Facing criticism from elders of the community, these folks weren’t afraid to show off their passion in a provocative way. Come enjoy the glamour.
Featuring a special performance by Jimmy Borges and the Grant Avenue Folies.
This program is partially funded by the Gee Family Fund.
Co-Presenter: Chinese Historical Society of America
