NBC’s St. Denis Medical star Kaliko Kauahi, executive producer Vicky Luu, and director Heather Jack will discuss how the hit comedy uses humor to highlight the all-too-familiar realities of modern healthcare. The conversation will explore how the sharp, character-driven workplace comedy, set in an underfunded Oregon hospital, crafts universal stories about life’s triumphs, trials, and all the moments in between.

About Kaliko:
Kaliko Kauahi portrays Val on the new NBC comedy St. Denis Medical. Kauahi is best known for portraying oddball Sandra Kaluiokalani on the hit NBC sitcom Superstore for six seasons. Other film and TV credits include the Farrelly brothers film Hall Pass, Ghosts, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks & Recreation and Modern Family, plus recurring roles on the iCarly revival and Raven’s Home. Kauahi was born and raised on the island of Kaua’i, Hawai’i and currently resides in Los Angeles.
About Vicky:
Vicky Luu is a comedy writer of Vietnamese and Chinese ethnicity. Born and raised in the Bay Area, she moved to Los Angeles to attend USC School of
Cinematic Arts, where she received her B.A. in Film and Television Production. She has written on various shows including Superstore, American Auto, Loot, and she currently serves as one of the Executive Producers and writers on St.Denis Medical. Outside of work, she enjoys bingeing shows with her wife, working really hard to make her kid laugh and then getting annoyed when she
“doesn’t get it.”
About Heather:
Heather Jack is a director and writer focused on comedy. Selected as part of the inaugural class of NBC’s Female Forward initiative, Heather got her start directing television on the show Superstore and was asked back to direct the following two seasons. Heather has since directed episodes of St. Denis Medical (NBC), Ghosts (CBS), I Love That For You (Showtime), Search Party (HBO Max), Dickinson (Apple TV), Atypical (Netflix), The Babysitter’s Club (Netflix), Party Down (Starz), American Auto (NBC), Miracle Workers (TBS/HBO Max), and upcoming episodes of Nobody Wants This (Netflix).
Heather’s short film, Let’s Not Panic, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, and continued its run at numerous festivals before debuting online as a Vimeo Staff Pick, Short of the Week, and screening on United Airlines. Heather also draws from her narrative background to create fun branded and digital content, working with clients including MTV, Vice, Comedy Central, VH1, IFC, Subway, CollegeHumor, L’Oreal, Vita Coco, and the I Love New York tourism campaign. Along with collaborator Charles Rogers (Search Party), she co-created the branded web series Tech Up, which was showcased at SXSW and earned over 1 million online views. Heather also directed a PSA for Lean In along with Funny or Die and Hulu, which was viewed over 5 million times and screened on Virgin America. Heather started her career in feature development at MGM and Jerry Bruckheimer Films. She received both her MBA and MFA from New York University’s Stern School of Business and Tisch Graduate Film Program. Originally from Northern California, Heather is currently based in Los Angeles.
