Description

Beauty is in the eyes of multiple beholders in this anthology of four of Asia’s most iridescent talents: Japan’s Kurosawa Kiyoshi (CURE), Taiwan’s Wu Nien-jen (Hsiao-hsien’s A CITY OF SADNESS), China’s Lu Yue (Zhang Yimou’s SHANGHAI TRIAD) and Hong Kong’s Mabel Cheung (AN AUTUMN’S TALE). In Kurasowa’s “Beautiful New Bay Area Project,” an oddball development director falls for an attractive dockworker, but when he snatches her nameplate from work, he unleashes the feisty kung fu vigilante hidden beneath her innocent veneer. In Wu’s “A New Year, The Same Days,” a beleaguered family man, with a nagging wife and two kids addicted to technology, experiences an existential crisis with comical results. In Lu’s “1 Dimension,” spectacular black and white silhouettes visualize the legend of “Prince Piety from the Land of Toto,” a chosen son whose skills of deciphering good from evil are put to a fatal test. In Cheung’s “Indigo,” veteran actress Elaine Jin (Edward Yang’s YI YI) juggles the demands of a nightclub career, an autistic son and a disregarded daughter gone rogue.
