Black Market Couple
Out of the Vaults showcases films ripe for rediscovery. Thanks to the Hong Kong Film Archive, we are thrilled to highlight two San Francisco productions by the legendary Chinese American producer Joseph Sunn Jue and his Grandview Film Company. The comedy BLACK MARKET COUPLE depicts a new generation of Chinese who are making a living for themselves in the United States, all while trying to adapt to local customs.
BLACK MARKET COUPLE depicts a new generation of Chinese who are making a living for themselves in the United States, all while trying to adapt to local customs. Wong Man-Bun (played by the multitalented Wong Hok-Sing) is upset because he is never allowed to take a vacation. He decides to take matters into his own hands and enlists the help of his good friend Chan Chi-Wai (Liu Kei-Wai), who agrees to let his wife, Ah Yuk (Leung Bik-Yuk), pretend to be Man-Bun’s wife. A hilarious attempt to play out the grand farce ensues in front of Man-Bun’s boss, who truly believes that Man-Bun and Ah Yuk are happily married and enjoying their honeymoon together. The exotic San Francisco settings (including Playland!) showed audiences throughout the Cantonese-speaking diaspora how a new generation was adapting to life in America.
