Margarita, With a Straw
Directed by Shonali Bose
Shonali Bose’s (AMU) riveting portrait of self-love and acceptance, MARGARITA, WITH A STRAW, challenges our cross-cultural perceptions of what it means to be differently abled. Laila (Kalki Koechlin) is a bright Delhi University student and aspiring writer, her cerebral palsy a footnote to her other achievements. When her blooming sexual desire and yearning for her band’s handsome front-man is met with crushing rejection, the blow is tempered by her acceptance into New York University’s creative writing program. There, Laila finds herself emotionally and domestically entangled with Khanum (Sayani Gupta) a blind yet self-possessed Pakistani woman who disrupts Laila’s desire for normalcy, and Luke (William Moseley), a fellow student who wholly embodies it.
A deeply personal film inspired by Bose’s cousin, an accomplished writer living with cerebral palsy, and the untimely death of her son, MARGARITA, WITH A STRAW dazzles with moments of quiet self-discovery and first love, unbound by ability and difference.
