Waiting for the Light to Change

Directed by Linh Tran

Cast: Erik Barrientos, Jin Park, Joyce Ha, Qun Chi, Sam Straley

Narrative Feature Grand Jury Prize, Slamdance 2023

Two words : Love Triangle. The worst best part – It’s your bestie…and her boyfriend. When Amy reunites with her high school friends, she grapples with her loyalty to Kim, her best friend, as old feelings for Kim’s boyfriend emerge. What’s meant to be a cute beachside getaway turns into a week-long surfacing of unresolved tensions when there’s very little to do and too much hanging out. Amy and Kim struggle to relate to one another as they reflect on the state of their stagnant lives and friendship. With surprising precision, first time filmmaker, Linh Tran, utilizes long, uninterrupted shots that linger and exposes the distance between both the desire for and inability to connect between these characters. Having won the Slamdance Film Festival’s Narrative Feature Grand Jury Prize, Tran is a talent to keep your eye on.

This film is for you if you’ve ever felt unsure about who you are or anxious about where you are in life.
