Directions in Sound: FANNY AND FRIENDS
- Music
- 90 mins
Let’s go back, to where it all began
Seventeen, then we started a band
Lugging our gear up and down the stairs,
Having so much fun, we didn’t really care!
Girls on the Road, Girls on the Go
Doing what we knew was gonna save our souls
Riding the wave, coming ‘round the bend
Once you feel the Beat, you gotta do it again
Girls on the Road lyrics penned by Fanny in their older years, recalling their early days as the Svelts, formed by three mixed-raced Filipinas, Jean and June Millington, along with their friend Brie Darling. What started as a way to make friends became a way of life. Their persistent music-making forged a path unlike any other, performing all across the country and eventually becoming the first all female rock band to release an album on a major label. Fanny led the way for so many other women rocker and musicians, but their story has been buried deep. Fanny is finally getting their due nearly five decades later as CAAM organizes a historic tour in California to revivify Fanny culminating at the Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience one of the most legendary bands that you never heard of ’til now.
Fanny performers will include: June and Jean Millington, Brie Darling, Alice de Buhr, and Patti Quatro.
They will be joined by local sensation Ruby Ibarra and the up-and-coming Peaboo and the Catz.
FREE. No RSVP required 🙂
