Award-winning director Baby Ruth Villarma gives a cinematically picturesque story of urgency with the documentary Food Delivery.
Out in the waters of the contested South China Sea, Filipino fishermen are on the front lines of a geopolitical battle. These fishermen, as well as the Armed Forces of the Philippines delivering supplies to Filipino soldiers on remote islands, have been harassed by the aggressive, territorial prowess of China’s coast guard and authorities.
Villarma immerses the audience in this story of resistance as she captures tense moments with Filipino fishermen and maritime personnel risking their lives to protect the country’s sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea.
In 2024, Food Delivery was set to screen at the 2nd CinePanalo Film Festival in Quezon City, in the Philippines. It wasn’t long before a statement was released claiming that Villarma and the festival organizers decided to withdraw the film from the lineup due to unknown “external factors”. If the film had not been withdrawn, organizers would have been forced to cancel the entire festival.
Instead, Food Delivery bowed at the 2024 Doc Edge Festival in New Zealand, where it was the winner of Best International Documentary.
Food Delivery foregrounds an ongoing issue that has impacted the Philippines. It’s a documentary about power and resilience that one country does not want anyone to see.
