Jersey Boy

Spanning three distinct periods of time, Jersey Boy is a coming-of-age drama that follows the life of Karandeep Singh. First as a boy (Rayaan Singh Sahni), then as a teenager (Surjun Lail), and then finally as an adult (Praneet Akilla). Marking his feature directorial debut, Sikh-Canadian filmmaker Jaskaran Singh offers a perspective that is seldom represented.

As Karandeep grows up, he struggles with his identity, love, and relationships while having to cope with a family tragedy in a post-9/11 landscape. With an even hand and quiet confidence, Singh guides us through a journey of family, community and belonging in a world where you don’t feel invited.

Jersey Boy was a quarterfinalist in The Academy Nicholl Fellowships in 2022, and landed on The CAPE List in 2021. The film continues to expand Singh’s narrative scope as he explores the intersection of identity and inclusion, giving a nuanced and thoughtful portrayal of his community.
