Vancouver's Chinatown was once rich in culture and diversity. As more of its heritage is traded in for new trends, the history of this storied neighborhood is getting pushed aside. Award-winning director Julia Kwan captures these moments in flux as the fate of this community unfolds.
FRANK WONG'S CHINATOWN (working title) is the story of 81-year-old Frank Wong. This unknown, self-taught artist has spent the past four decades recreating his fading memories by building romantic, extraordinarily detailed miniature models of the San Francisco Chinatown rooms of his youth. Wong's miniature dioramas become rare portals into a historic neighborhood.
For the fourth CAAMFest iteration of our innovative home movie initiative, we are thrilled to present a compilation of Chinese American home movies from the 1930s through the 1970s, with live musical accompaniment by acclaimed jazz musician Francis Wong.
