Directed by Shumin Liu
Following the Venice Film Festival and Slamdance, THE FAMILY makes its way to San Francisco, telling the slow-burn story of an ordinary elderly couple’s extraordinary efforts to stay connected with their family, against long distances and an ever-changing society.
In the wake of supporting their eldest daughter Liqin – a divorced schoolteacher and single parent – the seasoned guardians, Liu and Deng are compelled to visit the rest of their children dispersed across China’s dynamic coastline. A contemplative journey ensues as the two assume front row seats into the real and rawness of life in modern China.
Shot over three years entirely on 35mm film, THE FAMILY presents itself as a dutiful love letter to the meaning of kin and reveals a subtext of shifting roles that past and present, parent and child, experience throughout the undercurrents of life.
