Description
Artistic practices are often the first traditions shed upon an immigrant’s arrival in a new country. This CAAM-co-produced project features the stories of four artists living and working in California’s Central Valley, a part of the state more often regarded for its agricultural contributions than its artistic ones. HALFWAY HOME introduces these artists and lovers of craft who refuse to shed the artistic traditions of their homelands.
Harjeet Singh and Paramjeet Kaur have a shared passion for bhangra, a traditional Punjabi dance that they teach to the Sikh community in Yuba City. In Stockton, Lon Chan shares his devotion to hand-making traditional costumes for Cambodian classical dance. Nikiko Masumoto, of the CAAM production CHANGING SEASON: ON THE MASUMOTO FAMILY FARM, reveals how she creatively uses her work as both farmer and playwright to share the stories and traditions of Japanese Americans. HALFWAY HOME brings to light how communities can use artistic practices to meld a sense of belonging with celebration of cultural histories.
