The People’s Republic of Desire
Directed by Hao Wu
Sign in and travel to a digital, live streaming universe where virtual relationships are taking over as the go-to form of social connection and economic success. Filmmaker Hao Wu intricately explores the double-edged sword of online showrooms and how a generation of millions of young Chinese, from the ultra rich to poor migrant workers, has immersed itself in a world of idol competitions while searching for satisfaction and companionship.
Wu’s film, which was recently awarded Best Documentary at Austin’s South By Southwest Festival, insightfully profiles three live streamers in pursuit of fame, money and connection, and the impact this has on them and their families. With their personas and talents as their currency, these characters rely on votes, likes, tips, and gifts to validate their efforts in a market that can earn them six figures every month. As they struggle to be seen and acquire their desires, they encounter the same challenges of finding personal happiness and connection offline.
