Description
This series follows Kate and Michael, who are deaf, as they balance their personal lives and careers. Recently engaged, Kate struggles to find opportunities to grow in her career, while Michael attempts to get over a broken heart. THIS CLOSE is an exploration of Kate and Mike’s relationship as best friends and their longing to be understood.
In this episode of THIS CLOSE, entitled WHO WE ARE, Kate gets roped into participating in a panel without prior knowledge of the topic: “Disabilities in the Media.” Tokenized because of her disability, she must choose to advocate for herself or to stay silent and go along with the program. Meanwhile, Michael endeavors to stay afloat amidst deadlines and a confrontation with his ex. By accompanying Kate and Michael throughout their day, THIS CLOSE documents how we learn to communicate in relationships and navigate the complications life often presents.
Based on a short-form series that premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, we are excited to present a screening and conversation with Korean American director, Andrew Ahn. THIS CLOSE is co-produced by the Longmore Institute on Disability at San Francisco State University and the LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
