HAPPY TOGETHER

On the cusp of it’s 25th anniversary, CAAMFest is thrilled to bring HAPPY TOGETHER, one of Wong Kar-Wai’s most influential films to the big screen at Fort Mason Flix. For over two decades, this film is still considered one of the best LGBTQ+ films and was part of the New Queer Cinema movement in the 9o’s. HAPPY TOGETHER won Wong Kar-Wai a Best Director award at Cannes Film Festival. Wong Kar-Wai’s visual storytelling shines in this film with exquisite scenes shot in Hong Kong, Argentina and Taiwan.

In this seminal and gorgeous film, Ho Po-Wing (Leslie Cheung) and Lai Yiu-Fai (Tony Leung) are lovers who fight to keep their relationship together. As their lives get more complicated, their love for each other is challenged. The emotional performances by Cheung and Leung continue to be legendary for their intensity, complexity and humanity. This was very different portrayal of the LGBT community, when Hollywood representation was minimal and mostly problematic.

Join us as we cap off our Drive In experiences with a celebration of Wong Kar-Wai and his artistry. This screening is in partnership with the Roxie Theater.

HAPPY TOGETHER is the first screening at 6:30 PM as part of Drive In Day 3: Hong Kong Cinema Showcase.  It is followed by THE WAY WE KEEP DANCING at 9:15 PM. Purchase a “Drive-In Ticket (Single Car)” ticket to enjoy an individual screening, or select a “Day 3 Double Feature Ticket (Single Car)” ticket if you would like to stay for both screenings!
