Harvest Party at Camp Two is a love letter to Yuba City, which was notoriously named the worst place to live in 1985. In the 1980s, Yuba City was home to many Punjabi-Sikh farmworkers, including Kash Gill, who in 2009 became the first Sikh American elected mayor, and Karm Bains, who in 2020 became the first Sikh American to serve on a U.S. County Board of Supervisors.
This CAAM-funded documentary is co-directed by Reaa Puri and Rajan Gill, Kash Gill’s son who had grown up hearing about the legendary harvest parties that his dad and uncles attended, in place of the proms and homecoming dances that they weren’t allowed to go to.
The film weaves together contemporary interviews with the laborers and cinematic reenactments of this lesser-known Central Californian history. It celebrates a tight-knit community that faced racism and learned how to advocate for themselves – but also knew how to party.
