Description
Floating, swimming, drowning — Liao Jiekai’s sophomore feature tells three intertwined stories, bound together by sea and city lights, time and memory, happenstance and history. Childhood friends Guohui (Josh Lai) and Peiling (Eshley Gao) reunite as lovers, seeking refuge from Singapore on a quiet island. Others still seek escape, both from the island’s gravity and into the depth of its loneliness. All face the transformation of their city, their memories, their love.
Past, present, future — dense with haunting sensuality and brilliant imagery, the film unfolds into an interrogation of the meaning of failure, the pain of desire, and the hope in open water, shimmering between swaying grass and bustling metropolis. With beautiful stillness and vibrancy, AS YOU WERE tests the inescapability of erosion and the velocity of change.
