Directed by Koji Fukada
Continuing with his brand of exploration of human interaction, Koji Fukada’s HARMONIUM is a follow-up to his 2011 international breakout HOSPITALITE and his 2015 human-robot centric feature SAYONARA. HARMONIUM is a dark, family drama comprised of ruinous deception and secrets.
Director-writer Fukada offers an off-kilter take on the family drama with a quietly destructive tale of punishment, crime and regrets, set in motion when a seemingly ordinary family lets a mysterious stranger move in with them.
Catastrophe eventually falls, revealing hidden strains in the humdrum family as the perplexity of human motives become even more befuddled. A stranger on their doorstep, a ferocious love triangle, an unknown past and an innocent girl result in a dynamic tale that delivers cunning tragedies and passions.
HARMONIUM is yet another of Fukada’s ironic titles, referring to not only the pump organ played by the young daughter of the family but also the harmony — or the lack thereof — in the couple’s marriage and lives.
