It Is What It Is
Directed by Cyrus Tabar
Description
Filmmaker Cyrus Yoshi Tabar, a first-generation Iranian-Japanese-American, has a photo of his grandparents holding him as an infant. The photo captures his first and last encounter with them. Seeking to understand the fracture in his family, Cyrus embarks on a journey into the dark and nebulous corners of his family history. Fragmented and cloudy images of his family speckle his investigation as he talks to his aunt and sister, but discovers that a family’s narrative isn’t linear and that truth is elusive.

Random Acts of Legacy
Ali Kazimi / Docs / Canada / 2016 / Documentary / 77 mins
Culled from an artist’s collection of 16mm home movies, RANDOM ACTS OF LEGACY is a touching documentary that reveals an unfiltered perspective of the first-generation Chinese American experience. Set against the backdrop of race and class in Chicago from the 1930s to 1950s, Ali Kazimi offers a little-seen glimpse into how immigrants embrace American customs.Preceded by: It Is What It Is
