Gala Presentations

From the story of a young Indian engineer pursuing the American Dream and a young Chinese-Iranian poet discovering her true artistic voice, to the story of 11 time Jeopardy! champion Arthur Chu and the historical epic documentary on the Chinese Exclusion Act, this year’s Gala Presentations celebrate the cultural accomplishments and bring to light the generational struggles of the Asian and Asian American experience.

  1. The Chinese Exclusion Act

    Ric Burns & Li-Shin Yu / Gala Presentations / USA / 2017 / 130 mins
Filmmakers Ric Burns and Li-Shin Yu tackle a complicated and forgotten story of a significant piece of U.S. history — the only legislation barring an entire group of immigrants based on ethnicity and race. Through powerful and illuminating testimonies from subjects, scholars and experts, a wider, deeply American story comes to life, one that embodies the issues of globalization, immigration, labor and civil rights that continue to dominate headlines today.
